The Concept

Creativity and innovation are the concepts that inspire 080 Barcelona Fashion, without forgetting the importance of the market and the need to give fashion a commercial outlet.

080 Barcelona Fashion was conceived in July 2007, as part of the 2007-2010 Action Plan for Catalan Fashion promoted by the Ministry of Innovation, Universities and Enterprise of the Government of Catalonia working through the Consortium for Trade, Crafts and Fashion of Catalonia, its goal is to become a platform providing increased visibility for independent fashion designers and a benchmark for international avant-garde fashion and design.

This year sees the culmination of one phase of a plan that was designed with the intention of boosting the textile industry, creating synergies with today's fashion design in Catalonia and promoting internationalisation, strong ties between creativity and industry, financial backing and better support for emerging talent. At the same time, the plan aimed to organise a fashion event in the city of Barcelona that would place the Catalan capital firmly in the centre of the international avant-garde design scene.

This is the sixth edition of an event that, since its inaugural edition celebrated in July 2007, has grown and consolidated itself to the point where it now occupies an important place on the independent fashion circuit and has become an essential date in the avant-garde fashion and design calendar, transforming Barcelona into a top international showcase for the very latest Catalan and global trends.

Given the importance of the market, and thanks to permanent projects such as Projecte Bressol and BePhysic, and others of a more ephemeral nature but with a nonetheless important commercial impact, such as the 080 Barcelona Fashion Showroom, recent editions of the event have been able to provide the participants with a major commercial outlet for their work. In this way, the event responds to the difficulties that independent designers face when launching and marketing their collections, whether in national or international markets.

080 Barcelona Fashion is committed to the “culture of fashion” in the widest sense of the term and aims to be much more than just a fashion show. For this sixth edition, a series of parallel activities and round-table debates have been organised. We are confident that these activities will be well received and will help to take fashion out onto the street more than ever.

Calvin Klein held its biggest ever fashion event in Europe last week in true Berlin grunge-chic style. In a disused building complex that used to house the city's mint, the American label threw a party that made one wonder whether the printing machines weren't still rolling. White lilies by the metre plus gallons of Veuve and raspberry cocktails served by a small army of gorgeous young men provided extra sensory support to a living installation of some 50 models.
Posing on giant sculptural forms designed by Jürgen Mayer H, one of Germany's most interesting experimental architects, the models sported the coming season's oeuvre from the men's and women's Calvin Klein collections as well as ck Calvin Klein, Calvin Klein Jeans, Beauty, underwear and, in some cases, just their birthday suits. The show was an absolute relief from the bitchy pecking order of the conventional catwalk: no front row hierarchy, no jostling to get a good view, rather a refreshing opportunity to have a good long look at the collections and admire the detailing up close.

Kyle King

Designer Kyle King’s zeal and knack for fashion has been evident from a very young age.

An alumnus of Michigan State University, King took his creativity to London, studying art history and fashion at the American Intercontinental University.

King then made his mark on the Windy City, where he earned his Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Fashion Design at the International Academy of Design and Technology.

King continued to turn heads, receiving his first modeling offer while sporting his senior collection at the Academy's annual fashion show.

Shortly after graduation, King signed with the legendary Wilhelmina modeling agency and relocated to New York City.

While modeling, King’s aesthetic eye allowed him to flourish as a key contributor to the creative process.

Eager to be on the business side of fashion, King landed a job at ASG International, a fashion licensing and marketing company. While there, he had a rare opportunity to work alongside fashion designer John Bartlett and become versed in the complete design process from concept to runway.

King put his knowledge to good use, spearheading Bartlett's in-house public relations department for two years.

Armed with a wealth of creativity, skills and firsthand experience, King ventured out to pursue his long-time dream of creating the KYLE KING fashion brand.

When Vice called me last month with an out-of-the-blue offer to fly to Paris and interview the Kaiser himself, Karl Lagerfeld—creative director of the $10 billion Chanel empire, the house of Fendi, and his own eponymous line—I jumped at the chance. I have to confess that I wasn’t an expert about the fabled fashion kingpin prior to Vice’s proposition, but I did know that for a faggot it was tantamount to an audience with the Pope! I was duly excited to meet the Man Behind the Fan (which, I would soon discover, has long since been replaced by the Collar), the guru behind the dark glasses, and to try to separate the myth from the reality.

But having now met and spent time with Mr. Lagerfeld, it seems that, as close as I can figure out, the man really is the myth. It’s not that there isn’t any there there; it’s that somehow, by some strange alchemy, the person who descends the stairway of his fashion house, infinitely multiplied by mirrors, has transcended this mortal coil to become a pure creature of creativity. Lagerfeld is a study in perpetual motion, tirelessly darting between creative endeavors while devouring both history and the ephemeral present, the zeitgeist. A voracious reader and observer of life through books and popular culture, he filters the world into his couture and other creative outlets like a sort of supercomputer. When I suggest to him in the following interview that he may have Asperger syndrome, a rare form of autism characterized by an obsessive-compulsive “disorder” manifested as a kind of genius, he concurs.

What struck me most about Lagerfeld when I was doing my research was how closely aligned many of my beliefs were with his. Despite owning a private jet and multiple luxury homes, he is anti-materialistic and remains detached from his possessions, particularly as he has become more mature. He has a healthy appreciation for what some people might consider the “low life”—prostitution, promiscuity, what have you—and he is decidedly antibourgeois, which encompasses his distaste for the idea of gay marriage.

On meeting, I presented him with a list of ten beliefs that we have in common, which acted as a nice icebreaker. From the outset, he was warm and convivial. However, I must admit he cast a spell on me. For the hour and a half that I sat with him, I felt almost as if I were in a dream or under hypnosis—relaxed but entranced, and even slightly blissed out. La Lagerfeld is a guru, all right, and not just one of the fashion variety.

Vice: So, you’re very busy as usual.
Karl Lagerfeld: I’m always busy, but this is a really busy time. I like really busy times.

I do too. I’ve been watching various documentaries about you. I’ve been kind of surprised, as I’ve learned more about you, by how your philosophy has become very distilled.

Yes, very down-to-earth.
Sophisticated down-to-earth.

That’s almost like a paradox, but I understand.
I love paradoxes.

Me too. I think it’s all about paradoxes. People don’t get it; they think you’re being contradictory, but two things can exist simultaneously that are opposed. There’s no mystery in that.

I like that you make it clear that you don’t want to be photographed or filmed without your sunglasses on. I don’t either. Who would?

I’m actually nearsighted in one eye and farsighted in the other.
You can’t operate at all with what you have?

No. They say I’ll never need glasses because I only use one eye for distances and one eye for close up.
That’s perfect, no? I want to stay shortsighted or else I will need glasses for reading. But I don’t want them because I sketch, I do everything without glasses, except for speaking to strangers. Especially if they wear glasses, too.
